“Tenor” sings Loudly at 2004 lakies

by David Ditmore, Lake Awards Chairman

Lakewood Theatre hosted its 2004 Lakie Awards in January and “Lend Me a Tenor” was the big winner, taking home four of the six awards for which it was nominated.  There were many awards given and each of the nominees took home a medallion.

Before each award category, scenes were performed from Lakewood's 2004 season: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Steel Magnolias, Lend Me a Tenor, Blithe Spirit, and The Uninvited.  Each scene brought a unique aura to the stage including Madame Arcati (Blithe Spirit) and her moving mole, the Herdmans (Christmas Pageant) trying to make sense of Jesus' birth, and a scene from a Georgia cabin (Foreigner), where we all learned that "fork" was a four-syllabled word.

The highlight of the evening, however, came when Jim McCann from “Lend Me a Tenor” won as Best Director. McCann, who has since moved to New York city, was surprised he won and said he was so glad that he decided to fly back into town for the awards.

“Lend Me a Tenor” was then announced as recipient of the final award:  Best Play. The cast and director came on stage to accept the award. McCann reflected on what a great experience the play had been and how much he enjoyed his cast. He also was grateful his parents were there to see him win this award. And he added although he no longer lives in Nashville, he still thinks of Lakewood Theatre as his acting home. Miriam Grey added that the play was so much fun to do and she was excited to work with such a great cast. Tom Good also mentioned how excited he was that he got to reunite with Miriam on stage. Both Scott Miller and Chris Ebert thanked Jim McCann for doing a good job. I closed the show by thanking the audience, the board of directors, tech master Brian Morgan, and Maisie’s Diner. And of course, my final remark was to the actors and actresses in the audience saying “Break a leg and we’ll see you at next year’s Lakies.”  And the same goes for you!
